IGNI // ONE YEAR IN THE FLAMES
Short Film, Documentary
Hardi Grant Books approached us to create a short film to accompany the release of "IGNI – One Year in the Flames", a book chronicling the first, turbulent year of Aaron Turner’s award-winning restaurant, IGNI.
The goal was to capture the essence of Aaron’s creative process — the raw experimentation, the philosophy behind cooking with fire, and the intimate, hand-crafted nature of his food.
The Story
We joined Chef Turner for two days on a windswept farm on the Bellarine Peninsula, as he developed dishes destined for the IGNI kitchen — a restaurant where every dish is cooked over naked flame.
Alongside him, acclaimed photographer Julian Kingma documented the process using analogue film — capturing the still moments behind the chaos.
Our Approach
To reflect the texture and tone of the book — and of Julian’s photography — we chose to shoot the film on vintage lenses, embracing imperfection and tactile detail.
The result is a visual narrative that feels slow, smoky, and deeply personal — mirroring the aesthetic of film photography and the ethos behind Aaron’s cooking.
